The program included having the children view a NIOT film called “Leaving a Positive Footprint,” that told the story of how students at Grimmer Elementary School in Freemont, California worked together to make the school a “bully-free zone,” and how to be an “upstander” as opposed to a bystander. Then children made their own footprints and decorated the hall.

What can you do to respond to hate? Not In Our Town presents a series of online Stop Hate Action Kits to help communities, schools, college campuses, and law enforcement agencies show support for targeted groups and all residents, accurately report and respond to incidents, and proactively create welcoming, inclusive environments.

Seven years ago today, on Sunday, August 5, six lives were taken at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, in what was then the deadliest hate crime attack in US. history. In the wake of this weekend, there is much to learn from all of these leaders and the residents of Oak Creek about how a community can heal and transform after deep harm.
