Meet 8 New Groups on the NIOT Map!

At NIOT.org, we are committed to mapping out locations where hate occurs and where communities or towns are actively working to become more inclusive. In addition to incidents of both hate and resilience, the map also highlights anti-hate groups, NIOT film subjects, and school efforts against bullying.

Mapping out groups that strengthen their towns or schools against intolerance highlight the positive work that they are doing.

Here are some of the latest groups working toward building safe, inclusive communities who are standing up to hate in their towns and cities.

  • San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition San Diego, California
    • We seek to encourage victims to report hate crimes. We want them to know that help is available. Help not just from law enforcement, a dedicated community agency or a nice company, but from our whole community.
  • Anaconda Coalition for Tolerance Education Anaconda, Montana
    • ACTE, the Anaconda Coalition for Tolerance Education, was formed in 2005 in response to hate literature dropped in Anaconda by the white supremacist group the National Alliance.
  • Marshalltown Not In Our Town Marshalltown, Iowa
    • “Our group started to be proactive before any hate incident happened in an effort to raise awareness and rally support against hate and bullying.”
  • Davis Phoenix Coalition Davis, California
    • The Davis Phoenix Coalition was formed in July 2013, after a young gay man was brutally beaten, and the crime was tried as a hate crime.
  • Not In Our Town Bowling Green Bowling Green, Ohio
    • The NIOT BG effort officially started on April 17, 2013. However, discussions about NIOT actually started in late Fall 2012, as the Bowling Green State University’s President’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion (PACODI) was exploring ways to help improve the climate and address issues that had recently taken place in the local community.
  • Students Together Advocating Non-violence and Diversity (STAND) Olympia, Washington
    • Began in 2001 after members attended an Evening Against Hate which focused on Matthew Shephard and James Byrd.
  • Grimmer Elementary School Fremont, California
    • Our Kindness Council was formed as an on-going effort at our school to teach students how to be Upstanders, stop bullying behaviors, and ensure a safe learning environment for everyone. The 4th, 5th, and 6th graders lead the effort.
  • CSA San Diego County El Cajon, California
    • CSA San Diego County has decades of experience as advocates for fair housing and in mediating tenant/landlord issues, and we continue to do so today.
