As part of its 35th Annual Sikh Parade on Nov. 1, Yuba City, CA will host a special screening of Not In Our Town documentary Waking in Oak Creek, which profiles a suburban town rocked by hate after six worshippers at a Sikh Temple are killed by a white supremacist. In the year following the attack, the film highlights a community and law enforcement working together to overcome tragedy, stand up to hate, and create a safe town for all.

At the beginning of Bullying Prevention Month, we shared the UCLA psychology study that showed 70.6% of teens have seen bullying occur in their schools. However, if someone intervenes, the bullying stops within 10 seconds. All month, we’ve shared stories of amazing UPstanders who have stepped up and lent their voice to stop bullying and intolerance.

What is an upstander? An upstander is an individual who sees wrong and acts. A person who takes a stand against an act of injustice or intolerance is not a “positive bystander,” they are an UPstander. The word itself has the ability to empower students to make an active change in their schools, in an effort to build communities that support difference and unify against intolerance.

  More than 75 Bay Area supporters turned out on Wednesday night for a special screening of Waking in Oak Creek and A Prosecutor’s Stand in San Francisco, followed by a community discussion about community activism.
