We are seeing a tidal wave of concern about the prevalence of bullying everywhere. What can each of us do? Be an upstander.

The goal of most American teachers is to successfully educate all students, but too many black and Latino students underperform academically and fail to meet their potential. Educating all students well is not only important for the students themselves, but for our nation as a whole. We cannot have a just and democratic society without fully educated citizens.

CNN featured the work of Not In Our School in their May 8 piece, "Bullying by peers has effects later in life." In the article, author Ashley Strickland writes that bullying "can no longer be considered a rite of passage that strengthens character."

This week the Not In Our Town group in Bloomington-Normal, IL came together in a response to a controversial sign posted in front of a local cab company.
