An excerpt of the hour long P.O.V. documentary, the Fire Next Time follows a deeply divided group of Montana citizens caught in a web of conflicts intensified by rapid growth and the power of talk radio. The people of the Flathead Valley were stunned when a domestic terror cell's plot to kill local leaders was uncovered. Ex-cop Brenda Kitterman and conservationist Mike Raiman wanted to do something, but the community was torn. Many residents were losing their jobs in timber and industry, and blamed environmentalists.
After the killing of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, concerned community members of Patchogue, NY, formed the Unity Coalition, and hosted an evening of performances dedicated to unity and inclusiveness. Local high school students performed alongside a leading cast member of the Broadway production "In the Heights." When Alia Ansari, a resident of Fremont, California, was shot to death as she walked her daughter to school, community members feared she was targeted because she was wearing a hijab. To honor her memory, people of all faiths participated in Wear a Hijab Day.
