"That's So Gay": A Teacher Responds

South San Francisco, CA: Teachers 4 Soclal Justice met here last Sunday.

 

After a Not In Our Town screening, Jan Speller, who teaches English at El Camino High School, told us how she responds when her students say, "That's so gay."

 A few years ago I went through a phase where whenever I heard anyone call something "gay" I would say "Really? That _____ (tv show, rule, inanimate object) is homosexual?" This response must have been at least a little effective among my friends, since I stopped having to use it! Give it a try!
